Abstract

1382981 Cable glands BRITISH ENGINES Ltd 30 March 1972 [31 Dec 1970 14 April 1971 19 July 1971] 62056/70 9378/71 and 33811/71 Heading H2E A gland for passing a cable 8 through a wall 16 comprises an insulating component 1 and a metal component 2 adapted to contact the armouring 9 or screening of the cable. The parts 1 and 2 are held together by means (e.g. screw-threading, adhesive or force fitting) separate from the means holding the armouring against component 2. As shown an earth tag 14 is integral with the component 2 which has a diamond-knurled frusto-conical surface 11 which co-operates with surface 12 of nut 3 to hold the cable armouring. The gland is held in the wall by nut 17. In modifications (Figs. 2, 3, 10, 11, 12, not shown), the part 3 is formed with an insulating cover; a sealing ring is held against nut 3 and between parts 1 and 2; the earth tag is replaced by a separate component which is held against member 2 by part 1 or by a nut, and may have axially-extending teeth to ensure good electrical contact with the wall 16. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4 the insulating member has a metal lining 33, e.g. a tube perforated strip or wires, having a flange 35 in contact with the member 2 and a flange 34 in contact with a cable screening strip 28 the end of which is held in a key-way 36. The strip 28 is held against the flange by means of washer 37 and nut 38, and is therefore earthed through the tag 14. In modifications (Figs. 5-9, not shown) a screening tag (52) engages in slots in the left hand end of component 1 in contact with the strip 28; the flange 34 is dispensed with and strip 28 is held on the outside of tube 33 by a jubilee clip; the tube 33 is dispensed with, the strip 28 being held on the surface of member 1 against tag (52) as before, or by a surrounding clip in which case a metal collet (49) is urged into contact with the strip 28 to provide an electrical contact to the body part 2.
