Abstract

1505840 Oil/water separator BARTON HYDRAULIC ENG CO Ltd 26 Feb 1976 [4 Dec 1974 4 Sept 1974] 52382/74 and 36384/75 Heading BID An oil/water separator comprises a plurality of separation stages in series designed to separate oil particles of progressively decreasing size and is in the form of a cylindrical vertical container 1 divided into concentric chambers by internal annular partitions, e.g. 4, 10, each chamber having at its upper end a collecting zone 8, 12, 17 for separated oil, the separator comprising a first separating stage comprising a plurality of annular radially spaced shells 6 of which at least portions are inclined to the vertical, the shells being in an annular chamber 3 open at the top and bottom between the wall of the container and an annular partition 4 and means 5 for feeding liquid to the lower end of the chamber; a second separating stage comprising an oil coagular 11 and means 9 to lead liquid from the upper end of the first stage to the lower end of the coagulator; a third separating stage comprising one or more filters 15, e.g. of ceramics or sintered metal, located within an annular foraminous screen 13 above said coagulator and in direct communication therewith; means 19 for withdrawing clean water from a central chamber above the filter; and means 26, 27, 28 for withdrawing oil from the collecting zones 8, 12, 17. The compartments may be heated to aid separation, e.g. by steam or water coils or electrically.
