Abstract

1505067 Electrically-insulating pipe couplings BRITISH GAS CORP 13 May 1975 [17 May 1974] 22055/74 Heading F2G An electrically-insulating gas-tight coupling pipe for welding into a gas pipe-line 11, 12 comprises two spaced coaxial pipe pups 1, 2 separated by an insulating ring 3, e.g. of moulded glass fibre reinforced plastics, and reinforced by a rigid backing ring 7, one or more sealing rings 6, an outer sleeve 8 and a filling 9 of electrically insulating resin-based material, e.g. epoxy. The insulating ring 3 may be fitted with a steel backing ring 7 or bell ends (31, 32, Fig. 4, not shown) of the pipe pups may serve this function. The relevant surfaces of the pipe sections 1, 2 and the sleeve 8 are, e.g. sandblasted, to ensure a good bond with the insulating material 9. In a first alternative embodiment the insulating ring (23, Fig. 3, not shown) is tubular and an insulating lip seal is fitted in the gap between the ends of the pipe sections 1, 2. In a further embodiment the ends of the pipe sections 1, 2 are flared (31, 32, Fig. 4, not shown) and enclose an insulating ring with ring seals fitted between, no backing ring being then used for the insulating ring. The insulating ring may extend to fill the gap between the ends of the pipe sections, in this case, or an insulating washer (not shown) may be positioned there.
