Abstract

1504688 Removing SO x from gases EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 11 April 1975 [11 April 1974] 16145/74 Heading C1A [Also in Division C5] In a process in which a S-containing substance is subjected to an operation involving a step in which a gas containing at least one sulphur oxide is produced, sulphur oxides are removed by contact at 800-950‹ C., in presence of an O 2 -containing gas, with particles of size less than 100 microns comprising alkaline earth metal oxide or a substance convertible thereto. The gas may be passed through a fixed bed of the oxide or oxide particles may be fluidized by the gas. Water may be added to promote reaction. Specified oxides and precursors are CaO, Ca(OH) 2 , CaCO 3 , dolomite and halfcalcined dolomite. The SO x -removal process may be incorporated into a fuel desulphurization process in which S-containing fuel is burned in a bed of oxide particles, to form compounds, e.g. sulphides from which metal oxides are regenerated, for use in the reaction with SO x .
