Abstract

1504316 Air cooling installations L J DI PERI 27 March 1975 12807/75 Heading F4S An evaporative module X for use in a dry-air evaporative cooler comprises a heat conductive wall (e.g. a plate, or the walls of tubes 10) made of a plastics material (such as PVC) presenting opposite interfaces establishing two physically separated angularly related air passages, wetting means B (see also Fig. 5) being provided for wetting one of said interfaces (e.g. the external surfaces of the tubes 10). The module X as shown in Fig. 2 has the outline of a cube enabling it to be placed and/or stacked side-by-side or end-to-end with other modules X and/or with similarly shaped blower modules Y, Fig. 3 (and see also Fig. 9). An arrangement such as shown in Fig. 4 comprises a plurality of the modules X and Y and also a plenum module Z for subdividing an air stream passing to one of the modules X. In Fig. 4, an air stream a is drawn by one of the blower modules Y through the tubes of two modules X which modules are separated by the plenum module Z. In the plenum module Z part of the air stream a is diverted to form an air stream b which flows over the wetted surfaces of the tubes 10 of the module X downstream of the plenum module Z in heat exchange with that portion of the air stream a flowing through said tubes. Flow of stream b is assisted by one of the blower modules Y. Upstream of the plenum module Z the air stream flowing through the tubes 10 of the module X is in heat exchange with an air stream c urged by another of the blower units Y over the wetted surfaces of said tubes. In a further arrangement (Fig. 10) the assembly of modules X, Y includes also a refrigeration unit (R). Where the heat conductive wall in the modules X comprises the wall of tubes 10, these may extend between tube plates of resiliently compressible plastics or elastomeric material. The tubes 10 may have a roughened outer surface (Figs. 7 and 8) or may have an external wrapping of gauze (Fig. 6).
