Abstract

1503784 Cemented carbonitride alloy SUMITOMO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIES Ltd 16 Oct 1975 [18 Oct 1974 (5) 26 Feb 1975 27 Feb 1975] 42480/75 Headings C7A and C7D A cemented carbonitride alloy in which there are two hard phases, the gross composition of which is [(Ti,Zr,Hf) A (V,Nb,Ta) B (Cr, Mo,W) C ] (CxNy) y (1) wherein A, B, C, X and Y are respectively male fractions, Z is a male ratio of the metalloid components to the metal components and there are among A, B, C, X, Y and Z the relations:- A+B+C=1, X+Y=1 4A + 5B + 6C + 4 X Z + 5 Y Z # 8À6 (2) 0À05 # Y # 0À5 and 0À85 # Z # 1. the hard phases being present in a matrix of at least one binder metal selected from iron, cobalt and nickel, not containing, or containing minor amounts of the hard phase components, the binder metal being present in an amount of 0À01 to 0À5 multiplied by the weight of the hard phases, the hard phases being a WC phase and a hard phase which has the B1 crystal structure and contains Ti in a proportion of at least 20 atomic per cent of the metallic atoms. The alloy may be prepared by forming the carbonitride of composition described in Formula (1) admixing with the binder material and sintering under a nitrogen partial pressure of 10<SP>-4</SP> to 200 torr and cooling to the solidus temperature of the binder metal either at a speed of at least 20‹C/min or by maintaining the absolute pressure during cooling at a higher level than during sintering whereupon the carbonitride of Formula (1) decomposes into the hard phases WC phase and B1 crystal structure phase. A WC phase free layer may be provided on the surface of the alloy by re-heating the compound during or after sintering to reduce the nitrogen content of the surface layer e.g. by heating in vacuo or in a carburizing atmosphere to reduce the valency electron concentration in the surface to below 8À6 (Formula 2) whereupon the carbonitride in the surface remains stable and does not decompose to WC and Bl phases and provides a WC free surface layer.
