Abstract

1503681 Raising liquids by vacuum MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO K K AND KOBE SEIKOSHO K K 15 May 1975 [22 May 1974 23 May 1974] 20740/75 Heading F1R [Also in Division B1 ] Liquid is removed from a slurry (e.g. iron ore in water) held in a container 2 (e.g. hold of a ship) by withdrawing the liquid through ports 5 in the container by suction apparatus which comprises a vacuum tank 7, a vacuum pump 9 communicating with the upper portion of tank 7 to remove air therefrom and a drainage pump 11 communicating with the lower portion of the tank 7 to remove liquid therefrom. Preferably each port has a filter bed 5d (e.g. of iron particles) retained between screens 5c and 5e. Pump 12 discharges supernatant liquid from container. Means 14 may be provided for indicating the height of the layer of settled solids in container 2, the means comprising a weight which floats on the settled solids and is supported by a cord which passes around a pulley and is connected to the containers by a spring.
