Abstract

The composition, which has an improved shelf life, contains a solid, particulate herbicidal active ingredient whose particle size does not exceed 50 mu m. This active ingredient is dispersed, by means of a dispersant, in an aqueous solution of a quaternary bipyridylium salt which has herbicidal activity. The dispersant comprises, as component A, a cationic surfactant, for example hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride, and as component B an amphiphilic compound, for example a normal alkanol having 10-18 C atoms. Even upon prolonged storage at elevated temperatures, the composition does not tend to settle or flocculate. The composition is prepared by grinding the solid, particulate herbicidal active ingredient with water and a grinding auxiliary to a particle size which does not exceed 50 mu m, mixing the resulting aqueous dispersion with components A and B of the dispersant, and adding an aqueous solution of the quaternary bipyridylium salt before or after the 2-component dispersant has been mixed with the dispersion.
