Abstract

1501348 Bearings WESTINGHOUSE CANADA Ltd 8 June 1976 [14 Oct 1975] 23592/76 Heading F2A [Also in Division F1] A bearing in a gas turbine engine is supplied with cooling air from an intermediate compressor stage via the inner of two coaxial pipes, and the air escapes from the bearing via the annular passage between the pipes. In the engine shown, bearing 20 supporting shaft 14 within combustor casing 36 is supplied with cooling air from compressor 32 via an inner pipe 124, and this air passes through annular cooling passages 82, 84 and most leaks past labyrinth seals 92, 94 into annular spaces 93, 95, 99 from where it passes to atmosphere via pipe 130, the rest of the air leaking past labyrinth seals 76, 78 and leaving the bearing via its oil discharge line. The bearing is of the "Kingsbury" (Registered Trade Mark) type and has shoes which are mounted in and react against a housing 60 and which are pivoted to retainers 64, the housing having an external lubricant groove from which radial passages open into the housing. The shaft is driven by a turbine 24 served by guide vanes 44, and the engine also includes a free power turbine 26 mounted on shaft 12 and served by fixed and adjustable guide vanes 46, 48. The gases exhaust via diffuser 52 into plenum 53.
