1501093 Brake wear adjusting GIRLING Ltd 10 March 1975 [20 March 1974] 12244/74 Addition to 1152712 Heading F2E In an hydraulic brake actuator of the type in which a wear adjusting ratchet mechanism operates between the piston 1 and a mechanical actuator mounted in a counter-member of the hydraulic actuator (e.g. a further piston or, as shown, the cylinder 2) the mechanical actuator rotates about an axis parallel to that of the cylinder. Rotation of a handbrake lever 10 secured to a shaft 7 having a head 8 causes a thrust member 13, which threadedly engages head 8 and is prevented from rotating by projection 24, to move axially. Surface 16 of member 13 abuts complementary surfaces 17 on pawls 21 and forces them into engagement with linear ratchet teeth 19 on a rod 15 attached to the piston; the piston is thus advanced, without wear adjustment, and slippage of the ratchet mechanism is prevented. Pawls 21 are formed as spring-fingers on a ring 14 slidable on rod 15, movement of the ring to the left being limited by washer 26 fixed to thrust member 13. If therefore on hydraulic actuation the movement of piston 1, and hence rod 13, is excessive the pawls slip a tooth to increase the effective length of the strut formed by the ratchet mechanism.
