Abstract

1501089 Thermosettable coatings ROHM & HAAS CO 23 Dec 1974 [17 Jan 1974] 55540/74 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Metals are coated with thermosettable coatings comprising an alkaline aqueous blend of a binder comprising (A) a water-soluble salt of a tertiary amine and a water-insoluble copolymer having a viscosity average molecular weight of 20,000 to 200,000 and derived from (1) at least one C 1 -C 16 alcohol ester of an α, #-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, (2) 1-4% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated mono- or poly-carboxylic acid or a salt thereof with a volatile base or a partial ester or partial amide of such a polycarboxylic acid, and (3) 3-20% of a C 2 -C 4 hydroxyalkyl acrylate or methacrylate and/or a methyl or ethyl ester of α-methylolacrylic acid; (B) a water-soluble condensation product of urea and/or a triazine with formaldehyde or a water-soluble methyl or ethyl ether thereof; and (C) 1-5% by weight (based on A and B) of poly(ethylene glycol) or poly(ethylene oxide) as water-soluble rheology modifier having a number average molecular weight of from 400 to 100,000, the weight ratio of A to B being from 85:15 to 65:35, the minimum filmforming temperature of the composition being at most 25‹C, and the solids content of the composition being from 30-80% by weight. The compositions may additionally contain organic solvents or coalescents, and pigments. The copolymer may optionally be derived from further monomer components such as esters of unsaturated acids having up to 20 carbon atoms in the alcohol moiety, as well as vinyl aromatic monomers, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate or a nitrile monomer. The condensation product B is preferably a urea- or melamine - formaldehyde reaction product etherified with methanol. The compositions may be applied to metal substrates, e.g. of iron, steel, chrome-plated steel, tin-plated steel, aluminium, copper, bronze or brass in forms such as sheets or coils, and also to ceramic and wood surfaces. Application may be by direct-roll, reverse-roll or mandrel coater, or by spray-gun. Curing is suitably effected at 250‹-350‹F.
