Abstract
1501083 Soil testing apparatus RHG PARRY 14 March 1975 [22 Dec 1973] 59688/73 Heading G1S A specimen 1, Fig. 2, to be triaxially tested for strength and deformation is placed on a base 2 and surmounted by a cap 28 and the apparatus shown. Compression is applied by a piston 9 which is forced down through a bush 10 by a platen 13 acted upon a spring 6 and a further platen 14 driven downwardly by gearing 7 and 12. A rigid cell 4 containing the specimen may be filled with air and water forced there into and a duct 3 allows measurement of the drainage and/or pressure of pore fluid to be gauged. The downward movement is measured by a post 17 operating a dial gauge mounted on a fixed frame post 16 and the load on the specimen is measured by the relative movement between 12 and the top of a rod 11 fixed to the platen 13 but extending with clearance up through 12 to a pointer 20, Fig. 1, registering on a scale 18. For oedometer tests measuring deformation only under axial load alone and without surrounding fluid pressure, the parts 5, 6, and 7 are removed by undoing bolts 25 and the platen containing the bush 10 lifted out. The specimen is peripherally enclosed by a retaining ring, and an intermediate base member is positioned between the specimen and the pedestal, a longer soft spring is then inserted and the platen 13 arranged to contact the specimen 1 directly. The cell 4, the guide cylinder 5 and the top assembly are then replaced and the compression test carried out as before but without the surrounding fluid-pressure.
