Abstract
1500585 Electrophonic musical instrument NIPPON GAKKI SEIZO KK 21 April 1975 [29 April 1974] 16392/75 Heading G5J Apparatus for producing glide or portamento in an electronic musical instrument comprises means for establishing a time varying fractional frequency number S, and means for modifying the frequency number R<SP>1</SP>, currently being sounded, in increments of S until the glide or portamento ceases when R<SP>1</SP> tends to R, the preselected frequency number. A simple glide effect is produced (Fig. 2, not shown) by entering R into the m=4 position of a shift register so that S = R/2<SP>m</SP> = R/16, then adding R to S to give R<SP>1</SP>. (S may be made negative by a complementing circuit). Clock pulses increment m by 1 until m = 16 when the glide ceases and the preselected note is sounded. A slalom glide effect, where the sounded note is at first a predetermined interval flat then sharp and finally tends to the preselected note, is achieved by the circuitry of Fig. 3. S is produced in shift register 56 (and made negative in complementing circuit 27<SP>1</SP> if flip-flop 58 is set to 1) and added to R in adder 28<SP>1</SP>, from where it is relayed to the sound-producing circuit (not shown). Shift register 56 moves its contents one place to the right (divides by 2) at each pulse from clock 13, which pulse is also registered on counter 63. When m increases to 16 line 68, via gate 69, goes high, making flip-flop 58 go low and disabling complementing circuit 27<SP>1</SP> so that S is positive and R<SP>1</SP> is greater than R, and at the same time register 56 is reversed so that it shifts to the left and counter 63 counts down. When m=4 (a difference of about a semitone from the pre-selected note) the counter and register are again reversed, by line 64 going high, until R<SP>1</SP> tends to R when m= 16 again and flip-flop 74 is high so that clock 13 is blocked at gate 78, at which point the glide is terminated and the preselected frequency is sounded. Two circuits are described for producing portamento. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown) the current frequency number R<SP>1</SP> is divided by k (a constant) and added to or subtracted from R<SP>1</SP> depending on whether the second played note is higher or lower than the first. In this way a first note slides all the way to a second note. In the embodiment of Fig. 5 (not shown) the difference between the first and second played frequency numbers is divided by constant k in divider (101) so that a constant increment DR<SP>1</SP> is added to the previous increments in accumulator (103) at each pulse from clock (107). The sum of the increments are added to the first note frequency number in adder (111) to give the current frequency number to be relayed via line (14) to the sound-producing circuit. A comparator (123) detects when the current frequency number passes the preselected frequency number and resets flip-flop (117), terminating the portamento.
