Abstract

1500547 Detecting the hydrogen content of metal DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 12 May 1976 [19 May 1975] 21313/75 Heading G 1 A [ Also in Division H 1] In a method of detecting the hydrogen content of a piece of metal 1 pulse laser radiation 4 is directed on to the metal. This results in "pulses" of plasma containing hydrogen ions plus ions of any other substances present in the material. The plasma pulses expand and some of it passes through two apertures 7 and 8 to impinge upon a thin foil 9. The foil is within a doughnut shaped support member 10 which is maintained at a negative potential (-25KV). The foil 9 and the negative potential are such that only hydrogen ions striking the foil can penetrate it sufficiently to liberate secondary electrons from the back of the foil. The liberated secondary electrons are detected by the combination of a photo-multiplier tube 13 positioned behind a window 11 having a scintillator layer 12. The whole or a portion of each pulse from the photo-multiplier may be integrated to provide an output whose amplitude is a measure of the hydrogen content.
