Abstract

1499800 Portable containers BP CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 10 March 1975 [26 March 1974] 13325/74 Heading B8D A drum comprises a plastics body portion formed by two radially-spaced coaxial cylindrical walls 7 and 8 joined by integral longitudinal webs 6 to provide a cellular structure' and at least one end wall 5 attached to one end of the body portion, the volume of the plastics used in forming the body portion occupying less than the volume of the cells. The volume of the plastics is preferably less than one third of that of the cells and the difference between the radii of the two walls is six times the thickness of each wall. The end wall or walls may be of metal or plastics. When of plastics, at least one end wall may be attached by spinwelding, hot gas techniques, or induction-heating using metal inserts and adapted to extend beyond the body portion periphery to form a rolling rim. Radial strengthening ribs and internal perforated reinforcing discs may be incorporated. The drum may comprises two axially-aligned body portions joined directly end-to-end or to the opposite sides of a perforated disc 10, Fig. 3 (not shown). The body portion or portions may be formed by an extrusion process as described in Specification 1,042,732.
