Abstract

1499428 Pipe spinning apparatus BJHUGHES Inc 5 June 1975 [1 Aug 1974] 24297/75 Heading B3N Pipe spinning tongs comprise two levers 3 and 4 pivoted at 5 on a frame 1, pipe gripping rollers 8 and 9, at the opposed ends of lever arm 7 and actuating means 10 acting on the opposed ends of lever arms 6 to relatively pivot the levers to grip and release the pipe. Rollers 8 are rotated by motor 2 to rotate the pipe P. Adjuster means 15 are interposed between the ends of arms 6 and the actuating means 10 to effectively vary the spacing of the opposed rollers 8, 8 and 9, 9 so that different sizes of pipe may be gripped and rotated for a given stroke of the actuating means. As particularly described, means 10 comprises an hydraulically displaceable wedge block 11 acting on rollers 16, 18b on adjustably pivoted crank arms 44, 49, Fig. 8, on arms 6 which form the adjuster means 15. Rollers 8 are rotated through a gear arrangement 26-30 Fig. 3, not shown, and idling rollers 9 are adjustable into two positions on arms 7 by virtue of their shafts being eccentrically positioned on mounting plates 36 which can be supported in recesses in arms 7 in either of two 180 degree differing positions. Motor 2 is air driven. Rollers 8 and 9 can be covered with or formed of elastomeric material.
