Abstract

1499425 Benzofuran- and benzothiophenederived amides and amines SCHERICO Ltd 22 May 1975 [28 May 1974] 22371/75 Heading C2C [Also in Division A5] The invention comprises compounds of formula and their acid addition salts, wherein T is 0 or 5; n is 0 or 1; X is halogen, NO 2 or CF 3 ; Y and M are each H, halogen, Me or CF 3 ; Z is H, halogen, NO 2 , Me or CF 3 ; R 2 is H, C 1-3 aminoalkyl or aminocyclopropyl; and R<SP>1</SP> is CO, C 1-3 alkylene (or alkylidene), cyclopropylene or oyclopropylidene, provided that (a) when R<SP>2</SP> = H, R<SP>1</SP> is not CO, and (b) one of the following conditions applies when T is O or n is 0: (i) at least one of Y, M, Z and R<SP>2</SP> is not H, or (ii) X is not halogen, or (iii) R<SP>1</SP> is not CH 2 . These compounds are prepared by standard methods for forming the group R<SP>1</SP>. NRH<SP>2</SP>. Starting materials prepared are those of formula 3,6,5-Cl(HO)IC 6 H 2 COPh, Q<SP>1</SP>CO 2 Me, QCO 2 H, QCOCl, QCONH 2 and Q<SP>1</SP>CN, where Q<SP>1</SP> is 5-bromo-3-phenylbenzo[b]thien-2-yl and Q is Q<SP>1</SP> or 5-chloro-7-iodo-3-phenylbenzo[b]- furan-2-yl. Organic carrier materials such as paper, leather, photographic emulsions, canvas, rope, oil, foodstuffs, food additives, food supplements, or medicinal or cosmetic preparations (see Division A5) are preserved from microbial contamination by means of a preservative compound of the above formula, to which however, proviso (b) need not apply.
