Abstract

1497334 Rear view mirrors ICHIKOH INDUSTRIES Ltd 2 Oct 1975 [7 Oct 1974 (2) 15 Oct 1974 7 Nov 1974 8 Nov 1974] 40343/75 Heading B7J A rear view mirror assembly comprises a hollow mirror arm 3 supporting a mirror 1; a base member 4 adapted to be fixed to the body of an automobile such as on the exterior of a door; a support rod 6 connected to the base member 4 by rotatable joint means 5, 42 and extending into the arm; and a bracket 7 and supporting means 9, 81 mounted on the rod with a compression coil spring 8 on the rod therebetween to urge the arm against the base member, the bracket 7 being fastened to the arm 3 by screws 71 reached by a fastening tool through corresponding access holes 43 in the base member. The rod 6 has projections 61 serving as stop means against which the bracket 7 can bear prior to fastening of the screws 71, so that the spring 8 is held in a partially compressed state thereby during assembly. A supporting part 5 of the rotatable joint means has a part-spherical surface engaging a complementary surface of base member 4 to act as a ball joint, as shown, and a recess 41 of member 4 in which the bottom of arm 3 sits can be shaped so that the arm rotates and rides up out of the recess if the mirror receives an impact. Alternatively, Figs. 5 to 7 (not shown), the part 5 may be of rectangular shape which, upon rotation of the arm 3, is withdrawn through a rectangular slot in the base member thus allowing the mirror to break away.
