Abstract

1496358 Positive clutches; couplings ROLLSROYCE Ltd 12 May 1975 [22 May 1974] 22987/74 Headings F2C and F2U A double positive clutch for a reverse gear between a gas turbine engine and a rail vehicle comprises an axially slidable sleeve 28 splined at 30, 32 to a driving shaft 14 and formed with internal teeth 28a, 28b selectively engageable with externally toothed rings 18b, 20b connected to gears 18a, 20a freely rotatable on the shaft 14 by torsionally resilient couplings 34 which, if the teeth to be engaged are out of register, yield to permit engagement. The torsionally resilient couplings each comprise rubber blocks 34 bonded to metal plates 36, 38 received between projections 30b, 31a on the ring 18b and a hub 31 fast with the gear 18a. If during clutch engagement the teeth 30 on the ring 18b are out of register with the teeth 28a on the sleeve 28, the ring 18b rotates relative to its hub to permit engagement of the clutch teeth 28a, 30. During drive torque is transmitted from the ring 18b, to the hub 31, through the projections 30b, 31a. The ends of the teeth 30 are inclined to facilitate clutch engagement. The sleeve 28 is moved axially by selectively supplying pressure liquid through lines 40, 42 to chambers 44, 46. The toothed rings 18b, 20b are spaced so that the sleeve 28 is always in engagement with one of the rings and during a ratio shift is in engagement with both rings. The gears 18a, 20a mesh output gears 22, 26 directly and through an idler 24.
