Abstract

1495144 Spray-dried granules PROCTER & GAMBLE Ltd 10 April 1975 [11 April 1974] 16164/74 Heading C5D Low-density spray-dried granules, substantially free from nonionic surfactants, for use in detergent compositions, comprising solid non-surface-active components of a detergent composition which are not too sensitive to heat to be spray-dried, are prepared by a process comprising (a) preparing a slurry comprising 50 to 60% by weight of the solid components of which at least 26% on the same basis is sodium tripolyphosphate, from 40 to 50% by weight of water and 0À5 to 1À5% by weight of an anionic surfactant, (b) spraying the slurry into a counter-current spray-drying tower, the slurry being at a temperature not greater than 90‹ C. when it contains less than 44% water, and (c) drying the droplets to produce granules. The anionic surfactant may be a (C 11 -C 13 alkyl)benzene sulphonate. Other solid components may be organic or inorganic builders. The process is useful in the manufacture of detergent compositions wherein non-ionic surfactants are subsequently mixed with the granules, thus providing improved density regulation and the avoidance of "pluming".
