Abstract

1495004 U.V.-curable resinous compounds SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 4 Sept 1975 [6 Sept 1974] 39019/74 Headings C3R C3B and C3P A U.V.-curable ethylenically unsaturated resinous compound comprises the reaction product of (I) one mole of a polyhydroxy compound having m hydroxy groups per molecule, wherein m has a value of at least 2, (II) n moles of a diisocyanate, (III) 1 to n moles of an adduct of equivalent amounts of acrylic acid and a glycidyl ester of saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids in which acids the carboxyl groups is attached to a tertiaty or quaternary carbon atom and which acids have 9 to 11 carbon atoms per molecule, and (IV) (n-1) to 0 moles of a hydroxyalkyl acrylate, the total number of moles of components (III) and (IV) being at least n, n being smaller than or equal to m and the value of n being at least 2. It is preferred to react diisocyanate (II) first with componennts (III) and (IV) and then to react the product in a second stage with polyhydroxy compound (I). Alternatively polyhydroxy compound (I) may be reacted with diisocyanate (II) and the product reacted in a second stage with components (III) and (IV). Polyhydroxy compound (I) preferably contains 3 to 6 OH groups and may be trimethylolpropane, sorbitolÀ a reaction product of a polyhydric alcohol with ethylene oxide or propylene oxide or a diglycidyl ether containing hydroxyl groups. The monocarboxylic acids from which the glycidyl ester used in the production of component (III) is made are suitably obtained by reaction of formic acid or carbon monoxide and water with olefins. Component (IV) may be hydroxyethyl- or hydroxypropyl-acrylate. Ethylenically unsaturated compounds, e.g. styrene vinyl acetate 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate and/or a vinyl ester of a C 10 carboxylic acid, used as diluents may be added, either during or after the preparation of the resinous compounds. Photo-initiators for U.V. cure may be added to the resinous compound. Compositions containing the resinous compounds, photo-initiators and optionally diluents may be used to coat a variety of substrates and also as printing inks for paper and plastic sheet.
