Abstract

1493613 Composite boards G W WYNN Ltd 11 Nov 1974 [10 Aug 1973] 35267/74 Headings B5L and B5N [Also in Divisions E1 and F2] A board or panel of the kind which is formed by either a pair of sheets 4, 6 with intermediate stiffening elements 8 or a single sheet 74, Fig. 8, with similar stiffening elements has the stiffening elements arranged as one or more pairs 8a of the elements spaced apart to form a gap 10 of the same width as a stiffening element, and one or more single stiffening elements 8b, the arrangement being such that if the board or panel is suitably cut as at 20, 22, 24 (part 30, Fig. 3, not shown, of the top sheet being removed), the resulting board or panel portions is turned over so that its side opening 10a is opposite side opening 10b of the unturned panel portion, and the two portions are then re-arranged at right angles, a corner joint as indicated in Fig. 4 is formed, wherein the or each stiffening element 8b of one portion provides a tongue which fits closely in the or each space 10 between tongues provided by the stiffening elements 8a of the other portion. The stiffening elements are preferably secured between the sheets 4, 6 by adhesive strips 12, 14 so that the cutting is effected in unglued areas of the board or panel. Adhesive is also used to secure the interfitting tongues, surplus portion 40 of sheet 6 being trimmed off to complete the joint. In the case of Fig. 8, a similar corner joint may be made by interfitting a tongue formed by stiffening element 78b on one panel portion between tongues formed by stiffening elements 78a on the other panel portion, or the two panel portions may be interfitted with the sheets 74 of the two portions opposite and parallel so as to form a single double-skinned panel from the two portions, the strengthening elements 78a, 78b together with an infill 82 on each portion then substantially completely filling the space between the two skins of the composite panel. The arrangement of Figs. 1-4 may be modified by the inclusion of an intermediate T-joint between a further panel portion and one of the two portions joined at one corner (Fig. 7, not shown) in which case tongues (42a, 42b) formed on the further panel portion behave as a spigot formation entering a socket formation obtained by removing part of the upper sheet (4) of one of the other two panel portions. Further modifications are disclosed in the remaining figures, notably the use of a resilient single strengthening element 94, Fig. 12, having rigid facing layers 96.
