Abstract

1493558 Applying predetermined tensions to bolts TEXTRON Inc 26 March 1976 12187/76 Heading F2H To enable a predetermined tension to be applied to a bolt 1, a collapsible cylindrical washer 3 is used under a nut 4 which is threaded on to the bolt, the washer having end flanges 5, 8 and a cylindrical barrel with a length between four and five times its wall thickness, such that at said predetermined load, the barrel progressively collapses axially while plastically deforming radially outwardly. The bottom end flange 8 may be as shown in Fig. 6, or may extend only outwardly, Fig. 7, or inwardly, Fig. 12 of the barrel. The nut 4 has a shoulder 7 which bears on the upper end 5 of the washer, and a frusto-conical lower portion 14 to improve load distribution along the threaded bore 15. In Fig. 7, the washer is made integral with the nut.
