Abstract

1492819 Dust separator AVCO CORP 7 March 1975 9669/75 Heading BIT A separator for removing dust from the air intake of an I.C. engine, which may be a gas turbine, comprises a rectangular frame bridged by a row of parallel metal or plastics assemblies 32, each made in one or several pieces of sheet material and defining between them tortuous passages including two bends of less than 90‹, each assembly including a dust trap having a converging entrance 46 aligned with the inlet 34 of the corresponding passage. Apertures 56 in a side wall 30 of the frame lead from each dust trap to a common manifold 54, and 10% of the incoming air may be bled off through the dust traps and manifold to a dust-discharging pump (58) driven by the engine (Fig. 1 not shown). Entrances 44B are designed to induce turbulence in the traps to assist in blowing the dust into the manifold. The separator is shown with air flow downwards but may be differently oriented, as separation is by inertia rather than gravity.
