Abstract

1492037 Arc extinguishing ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 May 1975 [12 Aug 1974] 35453/74 Heading H1N An electric circuit breaker includes separable contacts which, during contact separation, are totally enclosed within a chamber containing an arc-extinguishing fluid under a pressure of from 2 to 100 p.s.i.g., the fluid consisting of one or more saturated aliphatic fully fluorinated fluorocarbons having from 3 to 8 carbon atoms in the molecule, including at least one such fluorocarbon which has at least 5 carbon atoms in the molecule. Examples of suitable gases are fully fluorinated paraffins such as perfluoropropane, perfluoro-octane, perfluoro-n-pentane, perfluoro-n-hexane, perfluoro-n-butane and perfluoro-iso-butane. Preferably the arc extinguishing gas has added to it a compatible fluorine compound which is liquid at the pressure in the circuit breaker, to increase the vapour pressure, such as sulphur hexafluoride which can be added in a liquid volume concentration of from one-tenth to one-third of the volume of the fluorocarbon or fluorocarbons.
