Abstract

1490844 Laminated fabrics RNC GRYLLS 8 Oct 1974 [17 Oct 1973] 50004/76 Divided out of 1490516 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions B6 and H5] A method of producing a bonded fabric wherein a fabric layer is heat bonded to an open network sheet which is of or includes heat softenable and bondable material, the heat softening the open network but not the fabric layer where this includes heat softenable fibres and/or filaments, includes also the step of simultaneously transfer printing the fabric layer during the bonding step. In a preferred embodiment, the network sheet is located between two fabric layers, the assembly optionally including electric heating coils between the fabric layers, the network sheet being bonded to the fabric layers at spaces between the coils. In an alternative embodiment, a layer of flexible plastics material is bonded to the other side of the network sheet, the assembly to be bonded preferably comprising a fabric layer, an open network sheet, the plastics material in the form of a foam, an open network sheet and a fabric layer. The bonding and printing may be carried out in a conventional printing machine, e.g. a flat press or a rotary machine using conventional inks and carrier sheets. The fabric may be a felt which may be needled prior to or after bonding and printing; alternatively, a woven or knitted fabric may be used, the exemplified fabric being a non-woven felt of acrylic or acrylic/wool fibres. The network sheet may be oriented polyethylene; alternatively, it may comprise a pattern of spaced dots of heat softenable plastics joined by filaments of the same material. The products may be used as clothing or furnishing fabrics or in footwear.
