Abstract

1490591 Flare stacks JOHN ZINK CO 18 July 1975 [30 Aug 1974] 30255/75 Heading F4T A temperature-pressure activated purge gas flow system for waste gas flares comprises a conduit 24 for introducing flare gas into a flare stack 16, pilot ignition means 20 and means 44, 62, for introducing purge gas into the system, means 48, 64, for measuring the temperature and pressure respectively in the stack, and means T, P, responsive to the difference between the temperature and ambient temperature and responsive to the pressure respectively, to control the flow 62 of purge gas into the stack. The stack includes a water seal 28. In operation, with means T, P, signalling the temperature and pressure in the stack, if the temperature in the stack is above normal, device T signals to valve 58 and purge gas passes from supply 60, through the valve and into the stack. However, if the pressure is also above normal due to flow of flare gas, pressure switch 56 prevents the temperature signal, valve 58 remains closed and purge gas is not supplied. A further control 14 comprises a pressure switch P which is actuated when the pressure in conduit 24 falls to just above atmospheric pressure, and a gas valve 40 is opened so that purge gas flows from conduit 42 into conduit 44, and thence into conduit 24. In a modification, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the water trap and control 14 are omitted.
