Abstract

1490308 Crosslinkable polymers and compositions thereof DOW CHEMICAL CO 11 Nov 1975 46548/75 Heading C3P A substantially linear vinyl addition polymer comprises a plurality of units of formula in which R 1 is H or methyl; R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 are each hydrogen or C 1-4 alkyl groups; R 6 is H or methyl and n is 0 or 1. The polymers are usually prepared by reacting a polymer containing oxazoline groups, with acrylic or methacrylic acid. The polymer may have number average molecular weight 500-50,000, preferably 1000-20,000. Up to 99 mole per cent of the polymer may be a comonomer which is a vinyl aromatic monomer, a conjugated diolefin, an alkyl- or hydroxyalkyl ester of an α,#- ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated carboxamide or an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated nitrile, e.g. styrene, butadiene, isoprene, lower alkyl acrylate or methacrylate, lower hydroxyalkyl acrylate or methacrylate or acrylonitile. A curable coating composition comprises 20-80 wt. per cent of the polymer and 80-20 wt. per cent of a reactive monomer diluent, e.g. styrene, a lower alkyl acrylate or methacrylate or a lower hydroxyalkyl acrylate or methacrylate.
