Abstract

A liquid surface-coating composition comprises a solution of a terpolymer of methyl methacrylate with from 8 to 40% of ethyl acrylate and from 0.2 to 5% of an unsaturated acid, or anhydride thereof, of the formula RCX=CY.COOH wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, X represents a hydrogen atom or a carboxyl group and Y represents a hydrogen atom of the group CH2. COOH, the percentages being calculated on the weight of the final terpolymer. In a modification of the composition the ethyl acrylate is replaced wholly or in part by a percentage H of another acrylic ester of an aliphatic or alkoxyaliphatic monohydric alcohol containing up to 10 carbon atoms and having a maximum chain length of 6 carbon, or carbon and oxygen, atoms, calculated from the formula <FORM:0942947/C3/1> in which A is the percentage of ethyl acrylate to be replaced and M is the molecular weight of the alcohol of the replacement ester. In the terpolymer, up to 10% by weight of the methyl methacrylate may be replaced by an equal amount of a monomer such as styrene, acrylonitrile or ethyl methacrylate. The compositions are obtained by polymerising the monomers in solution in toluene in the presence of benzoyl peroxide as a catalyst. Half the quantity of catalyst is used initially, and the remainder half way through the reaction time. Specified copolymers are those of methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate with acrylic acid, itaconic acid and maleic anhydride.
