Abstract

1490029 Disc brakes; reducing noise SOC ANON DBA 26 Sept 1975 [25 Oct 1974 23 May 1975] 39565/75 Heading F2E Each friction element 22 or 24 of a disc brake comprises a backing plate carrying a friction lining, the backing plate anchoring against guiding surfaces formed on a torque taking member (e.g. caliper 10); at least one anti-noise spring 46 co-operates with the friction element 22 or 24 and with the torque taking member and is fastened with respect to the backing plate so that the spring forms 46 with the friction element 22, (24) a sub-assembly removable as a unit from the remainder of the brake. In the embodiment of Figs. 1-6 the guiding surfaces (which are inclined as illustrated) are formed on key members 30, 32 which constitute the axial edges of an aperture 20 in the caliper 10, slots 34, 36 in the key members 30, 32 permitting installation and removal of the friction elements 22, 24. The element 22 is applied by the action of a piston (26) and the element 24 is applied by reaction the caliper 10 sliding on columns 12, 14. Each spring 46, which may be formed of piano wire, substantially forms a rectangle of which the two long sides are constituted by portions 48, 50 spaced by a distance substantially equalling the thickness of the backing plate. The portion 48 includes a U-shaped part 58 which is inserted through one of two holes 42, 44 in the backing plate, and portion 50 is placed beneath a hook portion 60 of part 58 to fasten the spring 46 to the friction element. The ends 54, 56 of portions 48, 50 seat firmly on key member 30 when the sub-assembly is installed in the brake. Springs 46 may be provided at each end of the friction element. In the embodiment of Figs. 7-12 (not shown) the spring (146) comprises arms (148, 150, 152, 154, 160, 162). The arms (152, 154) are inserted into an aperture (142) in the backing plate (145) and the arm (148) is placed under arm (154) to fasten the spring (146) to the backing plate. A curved portion (156) of the spring (146) co-operates with the key (130). The disc brake may incorporate a fixed caliper instead of a slidable caliper.
