Abstract

1,173,698. Disc brakes. ERNST HEINKEL A.G. 23 Feb., 1968 [9 March, 1987], No. 8862/68. Heading F2E. In a disc brake assembly of the type in which a brake pad is bonded or otherwise secured to a backing plate member which is slidably mounted by means of holes 5, 6 on two bolts 2, 3 screwed into a non-rotatable part. 1 of the assembly, the holes in the backing plate member 4 are enlarged and the spacing d2 between the holes is less than the spacing a1 between the portions of the bolts on which the backing plate member 4 is located. When the brake pad 8 and its associated backing plate member 4 is urged into engagement with the rotating brake disc 9 by a piston and cylinder device 7, 7A the backing plate member 4 is moved in the direction of the arrow so that the portion 2A of the bolt 2 bends slightly and resiliently to the left with a result that the brake pad 8 is pulled by the brake disc 9 instead of being pushed so that no brake squeal occurs. In the event of emergency braking taking place the resilient bending of the portion 2A is sufficient to bend the portion 2A before its elastic limit is reached so that both of the bolts 2 and 3 absorb the peripheral force acting on the brake pad 8 and the danger of overloading and fracture of one of the bolts, 2, 3 is avoided. The brake pad 8 is shaped so as to surround the bolts 2, 3 partially as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
