Abstract
1489783 Substituted keto-acids and esters and pharmaceutical uses thereof SANDOZ Ltd 10 Oct 1974 [10 Oct 1973] 43893/74 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of formula where R 1 is H, F, Cl or an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms; R 2 is H or an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms; R 3 and R 4 are each hydrogen or together represent oxygen; n represents 2, 3 or 4, and A is ethylene or vinylene, provided that when each of R 1 and R 2 signifies hydrogen, R 3 and R 4 together are oxygen and n is 2 and A is other than ethylene. These compounds may be obtained by reacting a compound of formula wherein R 1 , R 3 , R 4 and A are as defined above with a compound of formula wherein n is as defined above, X is chlorine or bromine, and Y is alkyl of 1 to 5 carbon atoms, or X and Y together form a bond, or (b) hydrolysing a compound of formula 0 wherein R 1 , R 3 , R 4 , A and n are as defined above, and R<SP>1</SP> 2 is an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, to produce a compound of formula wherein R 1 , R 3 , R 4 , A and n are as defined above. The intermediate 9,10 - dihydro - 4H - benzo [4,5]cyclohepta[1,2 - b]thiophene is obtained by the reduction of 9,10-dihydro-4H-benzo[4,5] cyclohepta[1,2 - b]thiophen - 4 - one which compound is prepared by the method described in U.K. patent No. 1,055,057. The invention also comprises a pharmaceutical composition which contains as an active ingredient a compound according to the invention in association with a pharmaceutical carrier of diluent.
