1486083 Centrifugal compressors and pumps I M KALNIN B L TSIRLIN E Z BUKHTER A D TERENINA G I EREMKINA A I POTEIKO and Y K BRESLOV 11 Sept 1975 37373/75 Heading F1C In a multi-stage centrifugal compressor or pump without an axial joint, having a stator consisting of a stack of inter-connected diaphragms 4-14 which have cylindrical holes 15 for receiving labyrinth seal holders 16-27, the holes vary in diameter along the axis of the machine, the diameter increasing in steps towards at least one end of the diaphragm stack. The diameter may increase from one end of the diaphragm stack to the other. Instead, as shown, it may increase towards both ends of the diaphragm stack, being smallest at the hole receiving the seal holders 22, 23. The central impeller 31 may be shrunk on to the shaft while the other impellers may be splined to the shaft so as to be readily removable. After removal of an end cover 38, together with a bearing 43 and seal 44 from one end of the machine, labyrinth seal holders and impellers can be removed in succession from that end to obtain access to the labyrinth seals without disturbing the diaphragms.
