Abstract

1381904 Centrifugal compressors CARRIER CORP 25 Jan 1972 [13 July 1971] 3488/72 Heading F1C A multi-stage two section centrifugal compressor comprises a casing 10 having end covers 15, 16 and formed with a cross-over passage 60 extending between the discharge of the last stage of the first section and the suction port of the first stage of the second section. A second, seal equalizing passage 67 is provided in the casing wall and extends between an annular chamber 63 defined by a diaphragm 50 and other means (which is end cover 15 in the embodiment shown), and the suction port of the first impeller of the first section. Gas leaking through labyrinth seal 64 provided between diaphragm 15 and the shaft 13 is returned to the compressor inlet via chamber 63 and passages 70, 67. A plurality of cross-over passages and seal equalizing passages may be provided and the latter may be formed by placing tubes in a mould and casting the casing about them. A barrel 11 having inlet and outlet passages 23 and 57 respectively surrounds the casing. The shaft is journalled in bearings mounted in the bearing housing 14 at one end and bearings supported by end cover 16, which is integrally formed with the barrel 11, at the other end.
