Abstract

1485985 Cutting apparatus IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 March 1975 [1 April 1974] 14283/74 Heading B4B [Also in Division B8] A web autowinder knife comprises a knife blade 1 slidably mounted in a holder 2 adapted to extend across the width of the web W, a compression-spring driven actuating arm 14 connected to the blade and a pneumatic piston- and-cylinder assembly 23, 24 arranged to compress the arm spring 26, pawl means 18 disposed to limit movement of the actuating arm and means 28 on the piston to trip the pawl whereby initial movement of the piston effects compression of the spring and further movement causes the tripping means to trip the pawl to release the actuating arm. The blade holder 2 is mounted on a pair of support brackets 7 freely rotatable on a shaft 8 mounted between the arms 9 of a part of the winder apparatus (see Division B8). The actuating arm 14 is fixed to the shaft to which is fixed a lever 21; the lever is connected to the piston-rod 24 and coacts with a latch plate 17 engageable with the pawl. In operation when it is desired to sever the web, low-pressure air is fed to the cylinder 23 thereby causing the piston-rod to move the lever 21 and thus rotate the shaft 8 and arms 14 until the latch plate engages the pawl, Fig. 9 (not shown); during this movement the nose 5 of the holder 2 is moved into contact with the web under the action of spring 11 until limited by a stop 12. High pressure air is then fed to the cylinder thereby compressing the spring 26, continued movement of piston-rod causing the trip means 28 to engage the pawl and release the blade; the web is then rapidly severed. The blade is provided with a serrated cutting edge.
