Abstract

1485064 Acrylate copolymer; powdered processing aid; coating compositions MONSANTO CO 20 Feb 1975 7122/75 Headings C3P and C3B A powdered processing aid for use in powder coating resins is prepared by (i) forming a mixture of (A) a carrier having a surface area of 50-500 m.<SP>2</SP>/g., and an average particle size of 0À01-500 Ám., and (B) a solution or wateremulsion of a specified liquid acrylate copolymer, and (ii) drying the mixture (with the proviso that mixtures employing solutions of the copolymer are spray-dried); the copolymer used in the invention consists of 5-95% by weight of a (C 1-12 alkyl) acrylate and 95-5% of a different (C 3-24 alkyl) acrylate, and has a weight average molecular weight of 2000- 10,000. The mixture may also contain a plasticizer which may be an alkylated benzene. Usually the carrier and the liquid copolymer are mixed in a weight ratio of 40-1 : 1. The carrier may be either a filler or a particulate resinous material. In the examples the liquid copolymers are composed of ethylacrylate and 2-ethylhexylacrylate, the carriers are finely divided SiO 2 , and the optional plasticizer is dodecylbenzene. A proprietary epoxy resin was mixed in varying proportions with (a) a filler (TiO 2 ), (b) a processing aid of the invention consisting of an ethylacrylate/2-ethylhexylacrylate (40 : 60) on SiO 2 , and (c) a curing agent consisting of dicyandiamide and "accelerated" dicyandiamide; the mixture was (i) dry blended, (ii) melt mixed through an extruder, (iii) granulated and (iv) hammer-milled to form powder coating compositions.
