Abstract

1484972 Sterilising composition NATIONAL PATENT DEVELOPMENT CORP 7 Jan 1975 [7 Jan 1974 4 Dec 1974] 584/75 Heading A5E A sterilising composition comprises a tablet containing a layer of a source of hypochlorite and a layer of a protected reagent for reducing the hypochlorite source to chloride upon contact with an aqueous solution of the hydrochlorite source, the protecting material preventing dissolution of the reducing agent in water until after the hypochlorite source has had time to kill any pathogenic microorganisms present in the water. The tablet also preferably contains a buffer for maintaining the pH at 6.5-8.5 when the tablet is dissolved in water. Preferred sources of hypochlorite are sodium and lithium hypochlorite and an N-chloro organic acid such as trichloroisocyanus acid. The preferred reducing agent is sic odium thiosulphate and preferred buffer is KH 2 PO 4 -Na 2 HPO 4 . The composition is particularly suitable for sterilising self contact lens using a protecting material of e.g. gelatin.
