Abstract

1484023 Forming non-skid surfaces MEBAC Inc 7 Aug 1974 34863/74 Heading C7F [Also in Division E1] A metal member has a non-skid surface thereon comprising a metal backing sheet having a layer of grit particles thereon, the particles being in direct contact with the surface of the sheet and bonded to each other and to the sheet by solidified metal and then covered by a separately applied layer of metal in direct contact with the solidified metal. The backing sheet may be of aluminium or steel and it may be cleaned and roughened before covering with a layer of grit which may be aluminium oxide, steel, glass, sand, ZrO 2 or stone. There may be a preliminary bonding step. The bonding metal may then be applied by an electric arc metal spray apparatus, and the coating layer by electric arc or plasma spray apparatus. In an exemplified process the backing sheet is moved along a conveyer under a steam or solvent cleaning unit and grit blasted. Aluminium oxide is then spread on the sheet with an abrasive feeder. The sheet is then passed under the preliminary bonding guns positioned at 45 cm from the sheet, and a coating of Al of 50-127 microns thickness applied. For the final coating, also of Al, the sheet is then passed under a set of 3 electric arc guns.
