Abstract

1483922 Centrifugal fans A W SPRASON 15 Oct 1974 [16 Oct 1973] 44737/74 Heading F1C [Also in Divisions F2 and F4] A device for extracting particulate matter from the vicinity of a seal, gland or bearing 2 mounted on a rotatable shaft comprises an inner portion 6 having an axial bore 5 to receive the shaft 1 and an outer portion 7, the two portions defining an annular Venturi passage therebetween. The two portions are conjoined by angularly spaced fan blades 9 located within the passage and at least one aperture 11 is provided extending through the inner portion from the end of the bore 5 to the region of minimum section of the Venturi passage so that on rotation of the shaft, air flows through the passage and causes an air-flow through the aperture to extract particulate matter from the vicinity of a seal, gland or bearing adjacent the device. The device is made of plastics in two halves secured together about the shaft by lugs or dovetails or screws, magnets or dowels. Suction cavities 17 in the device assist in axial positioning. The fan blades 9 can be inserted or made integral with the portions and are effective in both directions or rotation. An additional fan can be mounted as a snap fit on a seat 14 to assist in cooling.
