1483392 Bending resilient metallic clips SCHROEFBOUTENFABRIEK vh EVERTS EN VAN DER WEIJDEN BV 22 Jan 1975 [26 Feb 1974] 2799/75 Headings B3A and B3E A method of making a resilient clip comprises bending a length of bar metal into a planar, generally U-shape, Fig. 1 (not shown), bending the limbs (2), (3) of the U into identical curves lying in planes perpendicular to the plane of the U, Fig. 2, heat treating the clip and applying forces to the opposite ends of both limbs in the planes of the curves to cause permanent deformation of the two curves, the forces being applied at least twice and removed after each application. Heat treatment comprises hardening and annealing and prior to permanently deforming the curves, the ends of the clip have an offset h1. The clip web 1 is clamped in a holder 6 and a punch 7 bends the clip from the dotted line shape to the solid line shape so that plastic deformation occurs either by the application of steady pressure or a series of impacts. When the punch is withdrawn the clip takes up the dashed line shape and the process is repeated at least once until the offset is reduced from h1, Fig. 2, to a smaller value (h2), Fig. 4 (not shown). Finally the clip may be subjected to elastic deformation in the planes of the limbs of the U.
