Abstract

148,250. Dagory, A. E. A. June 19, 1917, [Convention date]. Ordnance, cleaning; machine guns.-Relates to means for removing the copper deposited on the bore of a gun by the projectile driving-bands, and consists in bringing into contact with the copper an easily-fusible alloy to which the hot explosion gases have ready access, and which has a constituent with an affinity for copper. The alloy, which consists preferably of tin, 55-60 per cent and lead 40-45 per cent, is placed on the base of a projectile before discharge. The tin forms with the copper a. eutectic alloy of tin, 97 per cent and copper, 3 per cent having a melting point 220 degrees, and this, together with the lead, which serves as a lubricant, is removed from the bore by the subsequent firing of a few untreated projectiles. The number of treated projectiles required to de-copper a 75 mm. gun is stated to be not more than 15, each projectile being treated with 10 grammes of alloy. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 20438/95, [Class 9, Ammunition &c.].
