1482442 Centrifugal separators E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 26 July 1974 [9 Aug 1973] 33206/74 Heading B2P A separator for removing entrained material from a gas comprises a vessel 1 provided with a riser pipe 3 for discharging material-laden gas within the vessel; an impingement cap 4 consisting of an impervious top 5 disposed above the discharge end of pipe 3 and of a skirt 6 surrounding the upper portion of the pipe and defining therewith an annular space, the cap being arranged to redirect gas in a direction sharply away from its direction of flow through the pipe; at least one vane 7 located between the riser pipe and the cap skirt, Fig. 1, or on the underside of the cap top, Fig. 5, to impart a swirling motion to the gas discharged from the pipe 3 so as to remove the entrained material by centrifugal force; collector means 8 located at or adjacent the bottom of the cap skirt 6 and below the vane for collecting de-entrained material; drain means 9 for discharging the de-entrained material from the collector means and from the vessel; and a clean gas outlet 2 from the vessel. The separator may be used to remove liquid and/or solid particles from gases. The collector means 8 is in the form of a weir from which the liquid or slurry is discharged via downcomers 9. In Fig. 1, the vanes 7 may be attached to the riser or to the cap skirt. In order to scrub the gas or coalesce entrained material before separation, a plug of fibrous material may be mounted in the discharge end of the riser pipe and nozzles may be provided upstream of the plug to spray scrubbing liquid across the riser cross-section and towards the plug. The clean gas may be exited at the bottom of the vessel.
