Abstract

1482410 Cleaning devices for magnetic tape machines EMI Ltd 9 Aug 1974 [31 Aug 1973] 41196/73 Heading G5R A cleaning device for a magnetic tape recording and/or playback machine has a cleaning tape housed in a holder of the form used to house magnetic tape in the machine, parts of the cleaning tape being distorted to protrude out of a surface thereof corresponding to a record surface of a magnetic tape used on the machine. The protrusions may be formed by embossing and/or perforating a plastics tape, the protrusions being on one or both major surfaces of the tape. The cleaning tape may be coated with or include colouring or antistatic agents and is provided on its own reel, e.g. in a cassette or cartridge, or may be spliced to magnetic tape on a reel to form a leader or trailer, e.g. in a cassette or cartridge. The cleaning tape edges preferably have in-phase sinusoidal wave shapes in the plane of the tape, so that the tape has a constant width but exhibits a weaving action to enhance cleaning as it passes through the machine.
