Abstract
1482150 Solar heating systems; tubular heat exchangers P M PRELORENZO 21 Oct 1974 [19 Oct 1973 19 Sept 1974] 45401/74 Headings F4U and F4S A solar heating installation comprises watercirculating solar energy collectors 1 connected by pipes 2 to a heat exchanger 3 in a thermally insulated and unpressurized water storage tank 4 and a consumer circuit 10 connected to a heat exchanger 15 in the tank. Water is circulated through the pipes 2 by pumps 5 controlled by thermistors 6, 7 which are connected in a bridge circuit arrangement whereby the pumps operate only when the temperature sensed by the thermistor 6 is greater than that sensed by the thermistor 7. The consumer circuit 10 includes a mixing valve 11 controlled by a control unit 14 to which is connected an external temperature sensor 12 and a sensor 13 in the circuit 10. A heat pump 18 is actuated by a thermostatic switch 16, having a temperature sensor 17, when the temperature of the heat exchanger 15 falls below a predetermined level. The evaporator 19 of the heat pump 18 absorbs heat from the surrounding water, initiating a thermo-syphoning action, which replaces cold water by warmer water arriving from the region of the heat exchanger 3. The condenser 20 located under the heat exchanger 15 restores this heat at a higher temperature and enables the heat exchanger 15 to fulfil its function. When the temperature sensed by the sensor 17 is such that the heat pump no longer operates, the switch 16 directs electrical current to a heating unit 21. A hot water tank 22 is connected in parallel to the solar collector circuit 2, under the control of temperature sensors 23, 24 and a valve 25. The solar energy collectors may be located on faces of the building to be heated, or on enclosure walls adjacent the building, Figs. 2-4 (not shown). Stored solar energy exceeding the normal requirements may be used for auxiliary purposes such as heating of swimming pools or greenhouses, or energizing a solar motor for driving a watering pump or a generator. The thermal storage tank may be formed from modular units connected together, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown). Each unit comprises four elements secured together, Fig. 8, each element incorporating a heat exchanger 46-49. As shown, the heat exchangers 46, 49 are to be connected to the consumer circuit and to the solar collectors, respectively, and the heat exchangers 47, 48 act as a condenser and an evaporator of the heat pump.
