Abstract

1481744 Air screened sterile areas SIEMENS AG 18 Oct 1974 [19 Nov 1973] 45298/74 Heading F4V A device for keeping an area sterile comprises a duct adapted to surround the area and provided with an air inlet for connection to a sterile air supply and at least one air outlet, the outlet or outlets having a position and configuration such that air issuing therefrom in use forms an air screen above the area. In the form shown, air flow from a single outlet slit 7 which extends around almost the entire periphery of-the duct 2 produces a conical air screen 8. At least two further air outlets 9 produce a further air screen parallel to the area 1, thereby to prevent flow of impure air between the duct 2 and the area 1. The slit 7 and outlets 9 may be replaced by at least two outlets and a single slit respectively in alternative constructions. The duct 2 may be formed with a flat base (11, Fig. 3) and is made from a flexible hose or as a rigid tube. The air flows to the duct 2 from a compressed air container via a filter. The area 1 may be a surgical operating zone of a patient, the whole patient or an area in which medicines or food is produced and packaged.
