Abstract

1481123 Corona charging apparatus XEROX CORP 14 Jan 1975 [16 Jan 1974] 1492/75 Heading H1X A corona device includes a trough-like shield 66, Fig. 2, a grid 68 in the open side of the shield, electrodes 78, 80 between the shield and the grid, and means for cleaning the electrodes and grid, the cleaning means having a part for flexing the grid, loosening particles adhering thereto, and scraping the loosened particles therefrom, and a part for wiping particles from the electrodes 78, 80. The corona device forms part of a known colour electrophotographic machine. As shown in Fig. 2, the device includes a trough-like shield 66 with the opening towards and close to a photoconducting surface. A grid extending lengthwise of the shield comprises parallel wires 68, which may be parts of a single continuous wire. Insulated plates 74 (only one shown) fixed to the ends of shield 66 have screws 70 to which the ends of the wire are fixed, intermediate loops passing round posts 72. Wires 68 and coronode wires 78, 80 are made of platinum. Coronode wire 80 lies under the wires 68, but coronode wire 78 lines under a gap between wires 68 and the side of shield 66. In use, coronode wires 78, 80 have a potential of 6000-8000 volts and the grid wires have a potential of about 925 volts, producing a corona current of about 200-500 Á amps. Cleaning means 82 (see also Fig. 4) comprises a comb with slots 98 engaging wires 68, and felt wipers 106, 108 engaging coronode wires 78, 80, mounted in a carriage movable along the wires by a rod 88 slidable along shield 66 and having a handle 90, which is accessible from outside the machine, and is used to move the cleaning means to and fro. A surface within the carriage engages the grid wires 68, pushing them upwards so that they are flexed as the carriage moves. This tends to loosen particles baked on to the wires.
