Abstract

1375630 Cleaning sensitive surfaces INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 6 Dec 1972 [22 Dec 1971] 56184/72 Heading G2H Excess toner is removed from the sensitive surface 11 of an xerographic drum by advancing the surface past a wiper member 50. The wiper is cleaned by a member 32 having a roughened surface 31 which is advanced past the wiper whilst applying a potential to the wiper to repel toner therefrom on to the member. As shown the member is carried on the xerographic drum but in an alternative form the member is stationary and a rotary wiper is arranged to contact the drum and the member. During cleaning of toner from the surface 11 an electrical bias may be applied to the wiper to attract toner thereto. The wiper may be polyurethane foam carried in a plastics 51 mounted on a conductive plate 53. An alternative wiper material is conductive neoprene. The member 32 may be a metal block having a grooved, knurled or flame-sprayed surface. The drum may be replaced by a xerographic belt having at one part of its surface a member 32.
