1480834 Thermal and sound insulation P CLEMENT and J-L JUILLARD 26 June 1974 [27 June 1973 20 June 1974] 28405/74 Heading F2X [Also in Divisions B5 and F4] A thermal and sound insulation arrangement comprises at least one insulating layer disposed between two outer layers forming part of a wall or floor of a building with a series of projections on one surface of the insulating layer being arranged in a uniform matrix of mutually perpendicular rows to define channels between the rows through which a fluid may flow, the ratio of the surface area of the insulating layer covered by the projections to the whole surface area being no greater than 0À25 : 1. As shown in Fig. 1, a floor may comprise a base layer 1, a cover layer 2, and an insulation material sandwiched between the layers 1, 2. This material forming the insulation comprises two outer layers 4, 5 separated by a series of projections 3 to allow the circulation of a fluid. The projections 3 are of the same material as the lower layer 4 and preferably integral therewith, the upper layer 5 being carried on top. Alternatively (Fig. 2, not shown), the layers 4, 5 are contiguous with the projections 3 supporting the lower layer 4. The layers 4, 5 are chosen so that one has good sound insulation properties and the other good thermal insulation properties. Air may circulate in the walls and floors of a building through the channels defined by the rows of projections and provide heating or cooling as required (Fig. 3, not shown). When the outer layers of the walls are warmed by the sun, the heat is removed by the air circulating in the channels in the walls which then flows through a heat exchanger at the top of the building. If one wall faces south and an opposite wall faces north, the former will tend to be warmer than the latter. These two walls therefore provide a heat source and a heat sink, respectively, enabling air from the hotter wall to be cooled by air from the cooler wall. In one method of manufacture, the projections are formed by the longitudinal and transverse cutting of a thick thermal insulating plate and the sound insulation is then glued on top. Alternatively, two thermally insulating plates are longitudinally and transversely cut to form half-height projections on each. The two plates are superimposed with the projections joining end to end. A sound insulating layer is then glued on to at least one of the faces. The layers can also be manufactured by moulding or polymerization in situ. The projections can be solid or hollow.
