Abstract

1479539 Glass-metal sinters CARL-ZEISSSTIFTUNG [trading as JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN] 19 May 1975 [21 May 1974] 21148/75 Heading ClM [Also in Division C7] A sintered product including copper or a copper alloy in a glass matrix together with copper oxide and optionally, one or more oxides of metals of Groups IVa, Va and VIa of the Periodic Table, may be used for a variety of applications ranging from a conductive coating, a surface protection, a bonding agent between glass or ceramics and metal, as solid friction elements in braking mechanisms or as wearresistant sliding materials, each application being dependent on the glass/metal/oxide ratio. The preferred compositions contain 0À8-8% by weight CuO, with 0À8-10% of the added metallic oxide, and the glass : copper ratio is about 1 : 3 by weight. The glass, which may contain SiO 2 55À2%; B 2 O 3 2À5%; Al 2 O 3 26À7%; alkaline earth oxides 15À6%; may be mixed with the CuO and other oxides prior to fusing and grinding, or the additions may be ground up with fused glass or the glass, metal and oxides may be ground together, and after the addition of the binder, e.g. paraffin, may be pressed into a block which is sintered in a reducing atmosphere at up to 1000‹ C. after predrying. Graphite may be added to the mixture before sintering to improve the sliding and wear characteristics of the compound. The addition of the oxides of the Groups IVa, Va or VIa metals, i.e. TiO 2 , ZrO 2 , V 2 O 5 , Nb 2 O 5 , Ta 2 O 5 , MoO 2 or WO3 significantly improve the bending strength of the glass/metal/CuO sintered compact, even in the presence of graphite which normally would lower the bending strength.
