Abstract

1479450 Thrust-producing mechanisms E J C RICKMAN 12 June 1975 [14 March 1974] 11353/74 Heading F2X A thrust-producing mechanism comprises support means attached to a rotatable axle means and carrying at least one mass extensive in a plane which is inclined at an angle to a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the axle means, and means for rotating the mass about an axis perpendicular to the plane in which it is extensive. In the embodiment illustrated, an axle 1 fixedly carries pairs of support arms 2 between which metal discs 4, 7 are rotatably mounted by means of sub-axles 3, 6. The subaxles 3, 6 are inclined, in opposite directions, to the axle 1. Means (not shown) are provided for rotating the discs 4, 7 about their axes of rotation in the same direction and at the same angular velocity as the axle 1 is about its axis of rotation. This produces a thrust along the axis of rotation of the axle 1, in the direction of the arrow 8 when the direction of rotation is clockwise. The overall angular velocity of a point on the edge of a disc 4, 7 is greatest when furthest from the axle 1 and substantially zero when closest to the axle 1. The reaction from the motion of the fastest moving point of each disc imparts a thrust in the direction of the arrow 8 in the opposite direction to that of the fastest moving part of the inclined disc. Greater thrust may be achieved by disposing more discs around the axle 1 and also by stacking further pluralities of rotatable discs along the length of the axle 1. To control the thrust produced, the discs may be rotated at a predetermined angular velocity with the axle 1 stationary, and the axle 1 accelerated as thrust is required to be developed.
